And it is, of course. How could it be anything less?
A proposed road user tax on electric vehicles (EVs) threatens to put the brakes on Australia’s clean transport transition. The Climate and Health Alliance argues this policy is dangerously short-sighted, ignoring the immense health and economic benefits of reducing tailpipe emissions.
Australia’s transport sector is a major polluter, and traffic-related air pollution is already linked to 11,000 premature deaths and thousands of hospitalisations annually.
This tax risks punishing people for making cleaner choices, deepening health inequities, and undermining our climate goals. Instead of penalising progress, Australia needs a national strategy that encourages sustainable transport for a healthier future.
